On March 12, 2025, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved a new treatment called Encelto by developer Neurotech Pharmaceuticals, Inc. This is the first time a cell therapy has been approved to help people with a rare eye disease called macular telangiectasia type 2, or MacTel. MacTel slowly damages the center of the eye, which is important for seeing fine details, like when reading or recognizing faces.

What Is Encelto and How Does It Work?
Encelto is not a pill or an injection you get many times. Instead, it is a tiny capsule that a doctor implants into your eye during a simple surgical procedure. Inside the capsule are cells that have been changed in the lab to produce a protein called “ciliary neurotrophic factor” (CNTF). This protein helps protect the eye cells that are needed for clear vision.
The capsule works like this:
Tiny and Safe: The capsule is very small and has a special covering. This covering lets nutrients get in and lets the healing protein get out while keeping the cells safe from the body’s immune system.
Continuous Help: Once the capsule is in place, it continuously sends out CNTF, helping to slow down the damage to the eye over time.
Why Is This Important?
Before Encelto, there were no treatments approved specifically for MacTel. People with this condition often lose the ability to see fine details, and there wasn’t a way to slow down the damage. With Encelto, early tests showed that:
- The loss of important eye cells slowed down.
- Patients maintained their ability to read at a steadier pace.

What Does This Mean for Patients?
Patients now have a new treatment option that could help slow down the vision loss caused by MacTel.
Doctors will continue to provide ongoing support by carefully monitoring patients after the procedure to ensure that the treatment is effective and to manage any minor side effects that might occur. With this new option, patients can look forward to a future with better-managed vision loss and improved quality of life.

FAQs –
What is the FDA?
The FDA is the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. It makes sure that medicines and treatments are safe and effective for people.
What is MacTel?
MacTel is a rare eye disease that damages the center of the retina, which is the part of the eye that helps you see details clearly. It usually starts in middle age and slowly causes vision loss.
How is Encelto given to patients?
Encelto is given through a small surgical procedure where a tiny capsule is implanted into the eye. The capsule then continuously releases a protein that helps protect the eye cells.
What are the benefits of Encelto?
In clinical trials, Encelto slowed down the loss of important eye cells and helped patients maintain their reading ability and overall vision for a longer time.
When will Encelto be available?
Encelto is expected to be available to patients in the United States starting in June 2025.
