Lenovo has taken a bold step forward in leveraging AI to support individuals living with dementia. In collaboration with Innovations in Dementia, the tech giant introduced “Alzheimer’s Intelligence,” a groundbreaking proof-of-concept AI avatar named “Liv.” This photorealistic 3D avatar is designed to provide real-time conversational support to dementia patients and their families, offering curated insights from lived experiences rather than medical advice.

A Personalized Digital Companion

Liv is much more than a virtual assistant. This AI avatar was developed using a composite of images from ten individuals living with dementia, with generative AI creating thousands of expressions and angles. These facial features are combined with a robust database built from Innovations in Dementia’s “Dementia Diaries” project, panel interviews, and real-life accounts.

The result? A highly responsive avatar capable of engaging in unscripted, natural conversations that reflect the tone and sentiment of the interaction. Sentiment analysis ensures that Liv’s facial expressions and responses feel authentic, creating a compassionate and human-like experience for users.

Empowering Through Innovation

Dementia affects around 55 million people globally, with that number projected to grow to 139 million by 2050. Early diagnosis often leaves patients and families searching for answers and emotional support. Liv bridges this gap, providing users with personalized advice on managing daily challenges, discussing diagnoses with loved ones, and finding new ways to navigate life.

Steve Milton, Director of Innovations in Dementia, shared,

“This AI doesn’t replace human contact but offers a knowledgeable and compassionate source of assurance and advice based on the expertise of people with dementia.”

Behind the Scenes: Lenovo’s Advanced AI Technology

Liv’s creation is powered by Lenovo’s cutting-edge AI solutions, including ThinkStation P7 workstations and ThinkPad laptops. With its AI partner Kaleida, Lenovo ensured that privacy, security, and responsible AI practices were at the forefront of this project.

The avatar operates through a large language model (LLM) trained on data from real-life experiences, which allows it to answer user questions conversationally. From suggesting memory aids like pill organizers to providing tips on discussing a diagnosis, Liv offers a tailored approach to improving the lives of those affected by dementia.

The Future of Alzheimer’s Intelligence

Currently undergoing trials, Lenovo plans to expand Liv’s availability to a broader audience, aiming to support millions of people impacted by dementia. Doug Fisher, Lenovo’s Chief Security and AI Officer, emphasized,

“With huge advancements in AI and smarter technologies, now is the time to explore creative ways to use technology responsibly for the greater good.”

This project highlights a growing trend in healthcare technology—using AI to create innovative, compassionate solutions. Liv represents a powerful step toward a future where technology not only solves problems but fosters connection and understanding for communities often overlooked in technological advancements.
